I enjoyed this video a lot. Thanks for sharing it! I don't think I am likely to roll weekly for the success of each faction towards their goals. I'll just make the near term history up according to my preferences, but taking the player characters' actions into account of course.

My experience was when three of the other members of the group I was playing with went overboard with their critical role obsession. Pair of half elves whose home village was wiped out being the most notable another ran a Fallen Assimar but went with a Folk Hero Paladin not understanding what a Folk Hero is. To be fair he freaked out when he realised I'm actually a creative DM and unlike the other DM I'm not an asshole. Found that out when he screwed up the game he was touting just for a cheap shot. I ran the next game and since he wasn't using Exandria as a setting I did however my one shot was actually developing nicely into a campaign whilst his went from a campaign into a series of failed one shots because he couldn't keep his game straight as he liked taking pot shots such as repeating saves instead of focusing on running the game properly. I quit after he decided to jump settings because his obsession made him forget that can't happen without cooperation. All he had to do was just ask and allow me to finish what I had sent them via email and it would have been easy enough. Sadly he didn't give a damn about either game and I was tired of his stupidity. Been almost 3 years and I've still been trying to understand why he did that. THAT is the Critical Role Effect where morons thinking they know better try to use Critical Role as an excuse to avoid playing or running the game properly. Thats why I don't believe in the Matt Mercer Effect.

gr8 world building tips. the trick is to prep whats directly in front of the party and drop story hooks about an interesting location you want them to explore next. every location is the right location is superb advice. with practice your players wont know what u have prepped and what u have improved.

Okay but Topaz dragons actually don't like water, their lair wouldn't be underwater, they prefer to stay dry. Yeah, it is weird that they lair near seacoasts when they have the personality of cats. But they're gem dragons of course they're weird.

I think the better comparison is Harmonquest and Dimension 20. Both are behind a paywall, both are more comedy focused, improv comics just spitballing on stage for an audience first, story second. CR is free to watch and more like a let’s play, and their animated show is not the same as Harmonquest, as they rewrote everything to be structured for narrative storytelling, not just animating their gameplay. I actually really like Harmonquest, it’s what got me into D&D and I rewatch it all the time. I don’t rewatch CR because who has time for that, and I actually don’t watch D20 at all.

Is this problem a product of the reaction to the mentality of "I want my character growth to be a matter of what I can do not what I own"? I remember a few years ago reading an article or forum post somewhere complaining about how the writer didn't like that. Character growth for Marshall characters was about their equipment rather than their own power, and how spellcasters growth was about their power, not just their equipment. Pair that line of thinking with the issue of DMS handing out too much powerful gear and then trying to scale back the power by having it stolen or lost or destroyed, and you'll get a batch of players and designers who recognize that the solution is to have power baked into the class progress table which can be tested and "balanced", rather than the equipment which can be mishandled.

Hard disagree. So many cool moments powered by an "actually I can do this" or "actually I'm still alive because of this". The whole table laughs every time. IMO that's why you have rules; if the DM just ruled that stuff, there'd be no tension

Shame on you for supporting Ben Milton and Knave 2e. Ben lied to us Kickstarter backers and sold advanced copies of what was supposed to be a Kickstarter exclusive cover at a convention before ANY of the backers got their books. I still don't have mine as of this post. Then he treated us like we were the bad guys for complaining when the exclusive cover was renamed "premium edition." Don't support ANY content creator that lies and then disrespects their backers. Shame on you both!

A trick I started using in the 90's for dealing with encumbrance was to substitute 'weight a character can carry' for slots. i.e., the amount of 'stuff' - weapons, gear, supplies, 10-foot poles, a given PC could carry. Let's say an average human can carry 20 items easily, not including worn armor, clothes, belts, packs, and pouches. I then assigned 'slots' to such things such as a pack and pouch. The average pouch 3 slots, a pack 15 slots, that sort of thing. Then, the PC could carry an additional 5 'slots' with a -1 for actions, combat, movement, etc. This would accumulate. 10 extra items? -2, and so on. We noted things like carried bags, which could be dropped (and lost, forgotten, or stolen in the heat of combat) and time for 'shrugging out of my pack'. Each item was considered something that you needed a hand to handle. A torch is an item, a bundle is 'a number of items bundled'. Smaller items, such as caltrops (which usually come in a bag) would be a single item - i.e. 5 caltrops held in one hand. Regular Rations - 1 slot or item per day per person; iron Rations - 5 days per 'slot' because they're supposed to be condensed and meant for survival, not flavor. Potions are usually in vials, so same as caltrops, a mirror, string, etc, same thing, so a single slot could hold different, small items. To further help the Players, I'd made custom character sheets with 'slots'. Bags and Packs would have a separate, smaller sheet which would remind them of what 'could' be lost if you set it aside and forget to grab it. Trust me, it only takes once or twice for a party to slog back to that last site of combat to fetch a badly needed pack or two before they become more aware of such things. That also opens up the possibility for another encounter. After all, the dead and debris of a battle are rarely left alone for long, eh? Tiny items, like those commonly used as spell components, would be 25 per slot for simplicity. Arrow heads, coins, gems, spell components, spices, and so on. Then we'd adjust for size. Smaller characters like Halflings can carry 25% less than a human, so 15 slots, where as a large character, like a Dragonborn for example, can carry 25 and so on.

One of those things that players and GMs avoid early on (and hopefully, begin to embrace later when they're seeking a deeper, more immersive experience). Darkness and light, as well as resource management. They race and are granted magical means to see in the dark; to produce food and water on demand; etc. So many lost opportunities.

I don't understand how people got to "campaign" meaning merely a "story arc of adventures tied together by a common plot". "Campaign" has always meant "game setting of a DM for a specific group of players over time". I suspect because recent gamers only participate in 1-5 adventures before calling it quits, so they think a string of narratively related adventures is a "campaign".

I feel like this video needs some clarification. I dont remember the force dice mechanic in the west end version of starwars. It is definitly in the fantasy flight version. Likewise the hunger mechanic is in vampire 5e but he showed vampire 2e on the picture. I feel like when recomending games to people you should be clear aboit what game your recomending.
